North Texas Embarks On First Road trip Of 2016
Mean Green Slated To Play Three Matches in Two Days
DENTON – The North Texas volleyball team will hit the road for the first time in 2016 compete in the Utah Valley Invitational in Orem, Utah, beginning on Friday.
The Mean Green (2-3) are coming off a five-set victory over UT Arlington on Tuesday night, and will have another full slate this weekend. North Texas the San Jose State Spartans, the Utah Valley Wolverines and the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Of those schools, only San Jose has a winning record at 3-0.
North Texas has not played Utah Valley since 2014, and has yet to play either San Jose or Southern Utah.
Match One: North Texas at Utah Valley (0-4, 0-0 WAC)
Friday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m. CT
The Wolverines are coming off four-straight losses. UVU fell to then No. 13 BYU, Cal Poly and Rice in the BYU Invitational and lost a home match to Idaho State. Offensively, the Wolverines are led by Madison Dennison and Lexi Thompson, who have 28 and 24 kills, respectively.
Match Two: North Texas vs. San Jose State Spartans (3-0, 0-0 Mountain West)
Saturday, Sept. 3, at 11:00 a.m. CT
San Jose State enters the weekend undefeated and has made quick work of its three opponents – Providence, UMass-Lowell and Manhattan - defeating each of them in three sets in the Spartan Invitational. The Spartans are led by Thelma Gretarsdottir, who leads the squad with 31 kills. The Spartans have out hit opponents .193 to .065.
Match Three: North Texas vs. Southern Utah (0-3, 0-0 Big Sky)
Saturday, Sept. 3, at 5:30 p.m. CT
Like Utah Valley, the Thunderbirds are off to a slow start this season, still seeking their first win. At the California Berkeley Tournament, Utah Valley fell in all three of its matches and only won one set. Southern Utahs player to watch is Chennin Benson, who leads the team with 26 kills (2.60/set).
