DENTON, Texas (8/31/07) Brooke Engel’s serve was on fire, but Texas State managed to cool off the Mean Green for a 3-1 (25-30, 30-25, 16-30, 27-30) win at the Mean Green Volleyball Classic.
Engel netted her second-straight five ace match of the day, giving her a total of 10 on Friday. The senior has 146 career aces to her credit, only six shy of Rachel Troell for second-best in school history. She also managed a team-season high 15 kills against Texas State.
The loss to the Bobcats (1-2) drops the Mean Green to 0-5 on the season, putting NT on the team’s longest losing streak since the 2005 squad started 0-8.
The loss comes despite an 18-dig effort from senior Jessica Hulsebosch and a 43-assist night from setter Heather Maddox.
Katy Prokof, who recently returned from injury, had easily her best match of the year with 12 kills.
The Mean Green picked up its accuracy in each of the last two matches, raising the team’s attack percentage nearly three-quarters of a point. NT still has some work to do, however, and sits with a .027 attack percentage.
North Texas returns to action tomorrow in the MGVC finale against Georgia State (3-2).
