Slow Starts Down Mean Green Volleyball In Season Openers
DENTON, Texas (9/28/09) - The North Texas volleyball team couldn't overcome a pair of sluggish starts, falling to UT-San Antonio and Northern Colorado in the first day of action at the season-opening Mean Green Volleyball Classic.
Amy Huddleston led all Mean Green (0-2) attackers with 23 kills on the day, but the middle blockers were the highlight for NT. The trio of Rachelle Wilson, Kati Dillard and Brittany Brown combined to slam home 28 kills on .343 hitting in the two matches. Wilson also added eight total blocks against UTSA (1-0), the most by a North Texas player in a single match since 2007.
NT bounced back from an 0-2 hole against UTSA to force a deciding game five in the matinee. However, 13 kills from Huddleston and 10 more from Wilson weren't enough to get past a Roadrunner attack that out-killed North Texas 62-48 on the afternoon (25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 16-25, 15-12).
In the evening match, Northern Colorado (2-0) didn't take its foot off the accelerator in a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-20, 25-20). The Bears, who knocked off SMU (0-2) in the first match of the day, hit .337 in dispatching the Mean Green.
Head coach Cassie Headrick gave Jessica Green her first start at libero against Northern Colorado, and she led the back line with eight digs. Sarah Willey, who started every match of 2008 at libero, got the nod in the season opener against UTSA and tallied 16 digs in the five-set affair.
The Mean Green Volleyball Classic kicks off against Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with UT-San Antonio facing Northern Colorado. North Texas takes on New Mexico State (1-0) in the 7 p.m. contest.
