DENTON, Texas (8/29/08) The North Texas volleyball team couldn’t get through a tough Texas Tech block, falling to the Red Raiders, 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 17-25), in the season opener.
The Texas Tech (1-0) front line of Brandi Hood and Amanda Dowdy, 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-3 respectively, combined for five of the Red Raiders’ 12 total team blocks. Hood added a game-high eight kills to put the match away for Tech.
With the Red Raider wall firmly in place, North Texas (0-1) countered with a middle attack, but it proved too little, too late. Seven NT players scored kills on the night, paced by newcomer Kati Dillard and sophomore Roxana Casvean with five each.
The Mean Green kicked off the match with a bang, putting the Red Raiders in early 3-0 and 6-3 holes. But sloppy play brought Tech back into the match. North Texas posted 29 attack errors and 13 service errors on the night, which was just enough to open the door for the Red Raiders.
Seven newcomers saw the court for the re-engineered North Texas squad. Salah Schoenecke, a transfer from Cal Poly, anchored the Mean Green defensively with eight digs.
Marelle Lepmets looked impressive in her debut as the Mean Green setter. The transfer from Estonia posted a game-high 20 assists and tacked on a pair of digs and a kill.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday versus Jackson State at 1:30 p.m. and against Metroplex rival UT-Arlington at 7 p.m.
