SAN MARCOS, Texas (8/26/06) The Mean Green volleyball team wrapped up play at the Texas State Tournament in style, knocking off the hosting Bobcats 3-0 (30-26, 31-29, 30-25) at Strahan Coliseum.
“This was a great win for us, and I think it will send us in the right direction for the season,” said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. “I think we picked up a lot of momentum with this win.”
The victory marks the first over Texas State in the Headrick era, and the first overall since the 1995 Southland Conference Tournament. The Mean Green is now 4-20 all-time against the Bobcats.
The Mean Green (1-3) was lead by Catherine Coffey who piled up 14 kills and three blocks against the Bobcats (2-2).
North Texas also received 10-kill performances from Brittney Gregory and Katy Prokof. Gregory, who was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt team, also had a match-high two service aces.
The Mean Green was not as fortunate in its first match of the day, falling 3-1 (28-30, 30-26, 26-30, 23-30) to Texas-Pan American .
Jessica Hulsebosch became only the second player in North Texas history to reach the 1,000 digs plateau against the Broncos. The junior recorded a match-high 21 digs against UT-Pan American, and now sits at 1,023 after a 19-dig performance against Texas State.
Hulsebosch is now second only in school history to Corina Marginas, who racked up 1,282 digs in her career.
The Mean Green heads to the Sam Houston Tournament next week to take on Southern Mississippi, Sam Houston State, Radford and Louisiana Tech.
