WICHITA, Kan. (8/25/07) The Mean Green volleyball team will come home from the Best Western Shocker Classic empty handed, falling to No. 14 Cal Poly, 3-0 (10-30, 18-30, 14-30), to extend its winless streak to three matches to open the 2007 season.
North Texas was unable to find its rhythm and struggled offensively throughout the weekend. The Mean Green posted negative hitting percentages in each of its last two matches, and averaged only 6.6 kills per game at the tournament.
Cal Poly, on the other hand, scorched the court with a .341 hitting percentage and 41 kills in sweeping the Mean Green. Overall, NT opponents this season are averaging 14.4 kills per game and a .276 hitting percentage.
Amy Huddleston and Catherine Coffey led the North Texas attack with five kills each, and Jessica Hulsebosch just was only one dig away from her second straight match in double-figures. Brooke Engel added an ace, and now leads the team with three on the season.
While the Mean Green will be disappointed in its opening weekend, it need not look far for inspiration. NT began the record-setting 2006 season with three straight road losses, but posted a 12-4 record at home and 23 wins overall.
North Texas returns to the friendly confines of the Mean Green Volleyball Center on Friday for the Mean Green Volleyball Classic.
