DENTON -- The Mean Green volleyball team officially reported for its first day of preseason at the North Texas Volleyball Center on Sunday.
Temperatures may still be scorching in the hundreds in Texas, however the players' arrival for the first of team meetings signals the summer is over and fall has begun. Eager faces walked onto the court at the Mean Green Volleyball Center, excited for the first official day of fall camp, many for the first time. The 2014 edition of North Texas volleyball features an incoming class of 10 freshmen, compared to only one just a year ago.
Today, however, seniors Hanna Forst, Eboni Godfrey, and Camille Cherry are just as wide eyed as their freshmen counterparts. It is Christmas in August for North Texas volleyball as head coach Andrew Palileo reveals the brand new gear the team will sport this fall. The level of excitement in the Mean Green locker room exploded as a result of five enthusiastic words from Palileo.
"On Wednesdays, we wear pink!" coach Palileo said.
Smiles filled the room as the North Texas players reached into a lower compartment of their lockers to reveal a hidden pink version of the Mean Green practice uniform. The uniform, to be worn at, you guessed it, Wednesday practices, is NT volleyball's take on the often-quoted movie Mean Girls.
As the gear reveal and team meetings with compliance and sport psychology staff come to a close, the team knows the real challenge lies ahead. Three-a-days.
Mean Green volleyball will hit the court for its first preseason training session tomorrow afternoon, in preparation for the upcoming North Texas Invitational. NT will open the season at the Mean Green Volleyball Center against Northwestern State on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
