Castaneda Helps Claim A2 Volleyball Title

DALLAS - New North Texas volleyball assistant coach Diego Castaneda made his Metroplex coaching debut over the weekend, but it wasn't for the Mean Green. Castaneda was on the staff of the USA Volleyball A2 Blue squad, which won the Women's Open Division title at the 2011 USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

The A2 Blue team, led by Cal standout and tournament MVP Tarah Murrey, went 7-1 at the Dallas Convention Center in claiming the title.

The USA Volleyball A2 program is a pool of the top 36 college players in the country who have been selected for their potential to play for the national team. Those 36 players were split into three squads (Blue, Red and White) during a training camp last week, and showcased their talents in Dallas.

Castaneda will begin his first season with the Mean Green this fall after rising through the ranks in six seasons at Baylor. The former Bear assistant and Bogota, Colombia native joins former Kentucky All-American Sarah Rumely as newcomers to the NT coaching staff.

The Mean Green opens the 2011 season on Aug. 26 at Lamar in Beaumont, Texas. The home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 30 will feature cross-town rival UT Arlington.
