DENTON, Texas (5/1/09) The North Texas volleyball team signed a pair of veteran transfers in Rachelle Wilson, last year’s Co-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, and former Southlake Carroll All-District standout Madison Barr.
"I think with Rachelle and Madison, we are getting athletes that are not only excellent volleyball players, but also leaders on the court," said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. "They both bring winning experience and a ton of talent, and will be perfect fits in our program."
Wilson (6-0, MB) made a name for herself as a sensational freshman at Iona last year. The Aledo, Texas, native led the Gaels down the stretch, finishing with the squad’s top hitting percentage (.286), which ranked fourth in the MAAC. Wilson’s 276 kills were also second at Iona and third in the conference, and her team-high 125 blocks were also the third most in the MAAC.
At Aledo High School, Wilson was named First Team All-Parker County, as well as the District 8-4A Outstanding Blocker and First Team All-District as a senior.
Barr (6-0, OH), a transfer from the Ohio Valley Conference’s Eastern Illinois, ranked fourth on the team with 121 kills despite missing much of the season due to illness. Her 2.05 kills per set ranked second on the squad, and she also managed 51 digs and 16 total blocks. Barr led the Panthers in kills six times last year, including a season-best 13 versus Southeast Missouri and UT-Martin.
At Carroll, Barr was a first-team all-district selection as a senior after being a part of four straight district championships. She was a member of the National Honors Society as well as the National Spanish Honor Society.
