DENTON (3/25/03) The 2003 North Texas volleyball schedule has been announced and features four tournaments, including the Mean Green Classic, and several non-conference regional match-ups.
The Mean Green will see its first action at the Lamar Tournament, set to kickoff on August 29 in Beaumont, Tex. Eleven of its first 12 matches will be played in a tournament setting, the only exception being a Sept. 10 home outing against Tulsa. North Texas will also compete in the Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State tournaments before hosting the Mean Green Classic Sept. 19-20.
"This is a tough schedule that will prepare us for Sun Belt Conference play," said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. "We are excited to have several regional teams on our non-conference schedule this year. The Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State tournaments are made up of solid fields and should be a good measuring stick for us early."
The Mean Green’s non-conference schedule is highlighted by matches against five teams that were ranked among the top-10 teams in their respective regions last season, including Saint Louis (5th, Midwest), Southwest Missouri State (8th, Central), Oral Roberts (10th, Central), San Diego State (6th, West) and LSU (5th, South). In the Sun Belt Conference, Western Kentucky and New Mexico State ranked fourth and eighth, respectively, in the South Region.
The Mean Green will play 13 home matches this season, including three in the Mean Green Classic. North Texas will host the Mean Green classic for the second consecutive season and for the 14th time since 1976.
"I think with LSU, Oral Roberts and UTEP playing in the Mean Green Classic, it will be a very competitive tournament and will give our fans an opportunity to come out and experience quality Division I volleyball," said Headrick.
The 2003 schedule also features a road-match against Metroplex-rival SMU in Dallas on Oct. 1, marking the eighth straight year the Mean Green has played the Mustangs.
