NT Volleyball Runs Out Of Steam In Fifth Despite Dillard's 26 Kills
#MGVB Drops Five-Setter To Sun Shine State's Florida Atlantic
BOCA RATON, Fla. - In a match with significant conference tournament ramifications for both squads, North Texas could not find the fifth-set magic needed to hold off a desperate Florida Atlantic squad that was fighting for its season.
The Mean Green came out flat in the first set against the Owls, but it retaliated with a dominant second-set defensive performance. It handed out four blocks and forced three Owl attack errors.
But a determined Florida Atlantic squad came out of the break swinging. Knowing it had to win out to keep its chances of a C-USA tournament berth alive, the Owls unleashed four aces and six blocks to knock off North Texas and take a 2-1 lead.
Once again, the Mean Green didn't falter. NT, led by sophomore Carnae Dillard's 26 kills, struck back with a convincing 25-17 fourth set victory.
Unfortunately for North Texas, there simply was not enough in the tank to swipe the fifth set on the road.
The Mean Green is 1-3 in five-set matches this season. Despite the loss, NT saw strong performances across the board.
Dillard added 14 digs and tied a career high with six blocks. Her first six-block performance also came against the Owls in 2012.
Four players for North Texas logged double-digit dig performances, including Analisse Shannon, who tied a career high with 16. The others were freshman Amy Henard (13), senior captain Shelby Tamura (16) and the aforementioned Dillard.
Senior captain Courtney Windham was the second player on North Texas in kills with 11. She also added a team-high eight blocks.
North Texas will close the regular season in Miami against FIU on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. ET. The Mean Green clinches a bye in the first round of the C-USA tournament with a win.
