North Texas Volleyball Picks Up Victory Over Charlotte
Mean Green Moves To 5-3 In Conference Play
DENTON -- The North Texas volleyball team secured a 3-0 straight-set victory over Charlotte on Sunday afternoon, moving its conference record to 5-3 on the season.
The Mean Green (11-12, 5-3 C-USA) offense was paced by Emma Eakin, who collected 14 kills and hit .722 in the match, her highest mark of the season. Amanda Chamberlain tacked on 13 of her own, while Holly Milam collected 11 in the match.
"The setters, both Karley York and Alex Janak, put Emma in a good spot today," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "Anytime your middles are hitting .524 and .375, your outsides should having a good day as well. Everything is driven off of our passing and our middles getting set, so that led to Emma having a big match today."
North Texas out-hit the 49ers .412 to .250, including .650 to .200 mark in the decisive third set.
The Mean Green got off to a slow start in set one, but the squad regained the momentum with a 9-6 run, taking a 17-12 advantage. Charlotte (7-17, 1-7 C-USA) strung together a few rallies of its own late in the set, but North Texas captured a 25-20 victory to open the match.
In set two, the squads traded leads early. With the set tied at nine, North Texas made its move, going on a 12-5 run to push the score to 21-14, aided by several Charlotte attack errors and timely kills from Holly Milam. Once again, the 49ers went on a late run to cut North Texas' lead to three at 22-19, but North Texas held on, securing a 25-21 victory and a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Palileo made a lineup change out of the break, sliding Janak in at setter.
"Karley was doing a good job for us, but I wanted Alex to get some game time experience at the setter position," added Palileo. "She did a good job coming in and had 13 assists in the third set for us."
The changed worked out nicely for the Mean Green, who never trailed in the set and led by as many as 14 before settling for a 25-12 victory and a 3-0 sweep over Charlotte.
York finished with 29 assists in her two sets played.
After being out-dug by Florida Atlantic a week ago, North Texas led in that category today, 34-20
With her two assists today, Amy Henard became the fourth player in program history to record 3,700 assists in a career
Holly Milam (11) and Amanda Chamberlain (13) recorded over 10 kills, extending their streak to four-straight matches with double-digit kills
The 13 assists by Alex Janak marked a season high for the sophomore setter
Today's win moved North Texas into a tie for sixth with Southern Miss in the conference standings
