Mean Green Volleyball Dominates UTEP, Earns 3-0 Victory
North Texas moves winning streak to three matches
DENTON - The North Texas volleyball team moved its winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 Conference USA victory over the UTEP Miners on Friday night at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
The Mean Green (10-11, 4-2) over-powered the Miners (4-15, 2-4) all night on both sides of the court en route to 25-20, 25-21 and 25-11 victories in a straight-set sweep, the sixth of the season for the Mean Green.
"We are starting to settle in with our lineup and it is helping our continuity as a team," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We are in a good spot in our conference schedule, so these are the matches that we need to take advantage of."
North Texas got off to a slow start in set one, trailing 16-10 at one point. The Mean Green have struggled when playing from behind this season, but tonight was different. The squad rallied back, going on a 7-1 run, netting the score at 17-all on a kill by Amanda Chamberlain. North Texas finished on an 8-3 run to secure a victory in set one. Momentum stayed with the Mean Green in set two as they strung together several multiple-point runs, securing a 25-21 victory and a 2-0 lead heading to the break.
Set three was a lopsided affair, with UTEP on its heels from the opening serve. North Texas began the set 7-0 run, eventually extending its lead to 13-2. UTEP rallied to within nine, but the Mean Green secured a 25-14 victory, its largest margin of victory this season.
Amanda Chamberlain and Holly Milam combined for 20 of North Texas' 44 kills, and each hit over .300 in the match. Amy Henard made her fifth consecutive start at libero for the Mean Green, who are 4-1 since she has taken over at the position.
"Amy has solidified the libero position for us since we made the move a couple weeks ago," Palileo added. "She has accepted her role and has really made a difference for us because it allows us to keep her experience on the court."
North Texas' serving played a pivotal role in the match. The team fired off 10 aces, securing victories in sets two and three on aces by BrynCaitlin Walker and LekaLeka Kiner-Falefa.
• Karley York led all players with 32 assists, her sixth-straight match with 25 or more assists
• Amanda Chamberlain recorded four digs to go along with her 10 kills, a new career high for the Lake Wood native
• Alyvia Palileo capitalized on her playing time tonight, recording two aces in the match. The two aces are a new career high
