HOUSTON - The Mean Green volleyball team concluded day one of the annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup with a three-set victory over the Cougars of Houston, effectively ending a three-game skid.

"Give the girls credit for coming back from a tough loss earlier this afternoon," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "I am happy with the way we controlled the match with some of the adjustments we made and pulled out the win."

Following two sets that saw the Mean Green in complete control, Houston gathered itself during the third set. Down 23-21, NT rallied to close out the Cougars in straight sets.

"This win says a lot about us," senior Shelby Tamura said. "We realized after LSU that we needed to take care of our side of the net, and we made that adjustment, resulting in a big improvement from this morning's match and a victory over a quality opponent."

It took 20 years for a rematch between North Texas and Houston, but the Mean Green grabbed its second win in the series' history over the Cougars with offensive efficiency and sound defensive technique at the net.

The win pushed North Texas back to .500 with a match against regional rival Baylor looming.

Sophomore Carnae Dillard led NT offensively with 15 kills, and senior Courtney Windham was not far behind with 13 of her own.

Freshman Amy Henard continued her success as the starting setter, tabbing 34 assists.

Also, Florida Atlantic transfer Chandler Hatton got her first start in a Mean Green uniform.

North Texas finishes its stay in Houston on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a match against Baylor at 2:30 p.m.
