MONTGOMERY, Ala. – UT-Martin had no answer for Courtney Windham and the Mean Green volleyball team in a 3-1 victory at the Alabama State Invitational (25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-23).
Windham posted 20 kills – her second 20-plus kill outing of the year – on a gaudy .500 attack percentage in helping head coach Ken Murczek pick up his 48th career victory. In NT’s two matches of the ASU Invite, Windham has 39 kills on .500 hitting.
Murczek earned those 48 career wins in 83 matches. If Murczek can reach win No. 50 in North Texas’ next five matches he will be the fastest NT coach to reach that plateau. Murczek will have a pair of opportunities tomorrow against Jackson State (9 a.m.) and Alabama State (7 p.m.) to reach that feat.
The Mean Green (11-5) was solid defensively in the opening two sets, forcing a sideout on 67.6 percent of the Skyhawks’ (2-9) serves. Shelby Tamura logged a match-high 25 digs, and Windham sent back a match-high four blocks. The Mean Green has out-blocked 12 of its 16 opponents this season.
The fourth and final set featured 12 lead changes, which was seven more than the other three sets combined. Much like the first two frames Windham had the answer, personally scoring three of the match’s final five points.
