Mean Green Complete Comeback To Make Program History

Sept. 5, 2014

SAN MARCOS -- The Mean Green volleyball team made program history in dramatic fashion Friday night at the Texas State Delta Zeta Classic by coming from behind to defeat Wichita State in five sets, for the first time in the all-time series.

"We came out anxious and put ourselves out of position to make plays," head coach Andrew Palileo said.

After falling behind early 0-2 early after the first two sets, the Mean Green looked likely to fall victim to their first three set sweep of the season. In a nail-biting set three, North Texas rattled off five straight points to pull away 21-18. After a Shocker timeout, the Mean Green had to hold off a late rally to close out the set 25-23 to pull within 2-1.

"We hung in there as a team, started making plays and the girls ran with it in the middle of set three," Palileo added.

North Texas, looking like a totally different squad than earlier in the night, stormed out to a 14-5 lead in set four. Wichita State would later concede the set 25-13 thanks to nine consecutive points scored by the Mean Green.

After a dominating fourth set performance by North Texas, all the momentum once held by WSU flipped sides. The incredible run by the Mean Green proved to be too much for the Shockers as NT completed the comeback by taking the fifth and deciding set 15-10.

"As a coach it was great to see our team come back from adversity and pull out the victory," Palileo concluded.

Week one Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week Carnae Dillard continued her hot streak with a fourth consecutive double-double after a 24 kill, 14 dig performance. Freshman Holly Milam stepped up in the absence of the injured Alexis Wright, who had an attacking percentage of over .500 in the previous two consecutive matches. Milam recorded 15 kills on a match-high .385 attacking percentage, in addition to five total blocks. Senior Hanna Forst also contributed 15 kills in the match.

With the 3-2 victory over Wichita State, North Texas rewrites the record books as they pull off their first win in program history over the Shockers after failing in the previous seven attempts. The Mean Green are now 1-7 in the all-time series.

The Mean Green, 4-1, look to improve on that mark when they take on a struggling Abilene Christian squad tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. in the second match of the Delta Zeta Classic in San Marcos. North Texas will later close out the weekend with a tough match against host Texas State at 7 p.m. in the tournament finale. Live stats and live video will be available for the first match of the day, while live audio will be provided for the second match in addition.
