North Texas Drops Both Matches On Saturday
Mean Green Fall to 1-3 To Begin the 2016 Season
Box Score vs No. 16 Texas A&M
DENTON - The North Texas volleyball team fell to 1-3 on Saturday after struggling to find consistency on both sides of the court in day two of the North Texas Challenge.
North Texas dropped a four-set match to the Texas State Bobcats to open day two. The set scores were 25-17, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-21 and dropped the team to 1-2.
The Mean Green got off to a slow start to open the match and were on its heels most of the set. The Bobcats gained momentum early and ran away with set one.
North Texas answered the call in set two, claiming a victory in a back and forth set that end in the Mean Green's favor.
Texas State would go on to win the match with victories in sets three and four, securing its first win of the 2016 season.
"Texas State did a much better job than we did as far as coming out with energy," said head coach Andrew Palileo. "We talked about it in our game plan that we had to match their hustle and we didn't. They outplayed us."
Texas A&M, the No. 16 team in the country, entered the match after falling in heart-breaking fashion to No. 15 Ohio State earlier in the day. Though they suffered their first loss of the year, the Aggies were ready to go, as were the Mean Green.
For those who were there to see both matches, the Mean Green squad that took the court in match two looked like a completely different team than earlier in the day.
North Texas came out in set one and took an 11-7 lead early. The Aggies rallied to take the lead at 12-11, but the two teams would trade leads after that. With the set tied at 17, the Aggies went on an 8-4 to close the set.
Though trailing by one set, the Mean Green controlled set two from the start and held a five-point lead at one point. Texas A&M battled back, but North Texas closed the set out strong behind Amanda Chamberlain's seven kills and secured a 25-23 set victory.
Set three was the turning point in the match as neither team was able to gain control of the set. North Texas had A&M at set-point twice, but could not shut the door, and fell 28-26.
The Aggies secured a 25-19 victory in set five, improving to 2-1 on the year. North Texas fell to 1-3.
"We challenged a couple players after our loss to Texas State, and I think they came back and did a better job tonight," said Palileo. "The challenge is not only responding to the challenge, but sustaining the success moving forward."
