The North Texas volleyball team opened the 2016 season on Friday in front of a packed house at the North Texas Volleyball Center. The squad would secure a victory over Nevada in match one, but came up short against No. 15 Ohio State to finish the day at 1-1.
The squad secured a five-set victory over Nevada Friday morning, defeating the Wolfpack 3-2 (25-23, 25-12, 27-25, 24-26 and 15-7).
North Texas jumped out to a commanding two-set lead over Nevada, led by juniors Holly Milam and Amanda Chamberlain. Though trailing, Nevada would not go away quietly.
The Wolf Pack grinded out back-to-back two-point set victories over the Mean Green to force a decisive fifth set.
"In the first two sets, we really executed," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We let off in our serve game and they made a couple plays to take the next two sets, but I thought we brought it back together nicely and took the match."
With the score tied at two-sets apiece, the Mean Green seized control of set five early and ran away with a 15-7 victory en route to its first win of the season.
Three members of the Mean Green squad reached double figures in kills. Milam recorded new career-high in kills with 16, while Chamberlain added 13 of her own. In her NCAA debut, BrynCaitlin Walker turned in a stellar performance with 16 kills in 39 attempts.
Senior Amy Henard logged 46 assists in the match and LekaLeka Kiner-Falefa recorded 18 digs for the Mean Green.
The Mean Green played host to No. 15 Ohio State, who also entered 1-0 after defeating Texas State in straight sets earlier in the day. The wBuckeyes would go on to win the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-17 and 25-19).
The first set was a back and forth struggle, with each team jostling for control early. Neither squad was able to pull away, but offensive and defensive mistakes led to the Mean Green falling 25-23 in set one.
"We came out well and forced them to make some errors, but we also had two miscommunication plays that really put is in a bind," said Palileo.
Offensively, the Mean Green struggled to find its rhythm after set one and Ohio State played into it.
"They started serving us short and we didn't handle it very well. We put ourself in a position where we could not execute offensively and that was the turning point of the match."
The Buckeyes would secure a victory in set two 25-17 and set three 25-19. Ohio State improved to 2-0, while the Mean Green dropped to 1-1.
