DENTON - The North Texas tennis team will host its second-annual Wild West Open Shootout this weekend, welcoming teams and athletes from across the country to the Waranch Tennis Complex.
In addition to the hosting Mean Green, five programs - UTA, TCU, Liberty University, Seminole State College and Collin County Community College - will take part in a three-day tournament that features two singles draws and one doubles draw. In all, seven players will represent North Texas throughout the weekend.
“I’m excited because our players are excited,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “They all want to showcase the team that we have and this will be an opportunity to finish the fall season on a high.”
Match play will begin on Friday, Nov. 6, at 9 a.m. CT with the first round of doubles action, followed by two rounds of singles play. Saturday will also begin at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles play, and the day will wind down with the semifinal singles round. Each championship match will take place on Sunday, with the doubles final beginning at 10 a.m.
Three North Texas players will take part in the Flight A draw. Freshman Maria Kononova - the team’s top-seeded player - takes the court against Liberty freshman Anna Dollar, freshman Tamuna Kutubidze will take on sophomore Miranda Rodriguez from Seminole State College, and junior Alexis Thoma will face UTA junior Jessica Birowski.
A pair of first-round byes in the Flight B draw automatically advances North Texas seniors Anastasiya Shestakova and Kamilla Galieva into the quarterfinal rounds. Meanwhile, senior Agustina Valenzuela will duel with Liberty senior Valerie Thong, and there will be a freshman showdown when Laura Arciniegas takes on Zahra Finnigan from Seminole State College.
In the doubles portion, Valenzuela and Thoma pair up and will play Finnigan and freshman Celine Massereau of Liberty, while Galieva and Shestakova match up with UTA’s Birowski and sophomore Agustina Serio. The duo of Kononova and Kutubidze joined the team of Arciniegas and unattached competitor Minying Liang in receiving a first-round bye in the doubles draw.
Always a motivator, Lama knows the team will be fired up to play on its home court but he is well aware of the message he will give to his players before action kicks off on Friday morning.
“Go out, show this awesome fan base what you’ve got and give them a reason to get excited for the spring season,” Lama said. “Embrace this opportunity.”
