COLLEGE STATION, TX (10/26/05) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team completed play at the Wilson ITA Southwest Regionals on Monday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, finishing the five-day tournament with a combined 8-7 singles record and 3-4 doubles record.
The Southwest Regional was the final fall tournament on the Mean Green’s schedule, but North Texas will host an Alumni Tournament on November 5. In three fall tournaments, six North Texas players compiled a combined 30-23 record and five different doubles pairings went a combined 11-16.
Sophomore Aziza Aba Butain and freshman Lynley Wasson led all North Texas players in wins and winning percentage during the fall as both players finished with identical 7-3 records. In doubles play, freshman Sammie Moreton and junior Megan Schmulbach collected a team-best six victories.
Junior Katherine Harris, Aba Butain and Wasson led the way for the Mean Green at the Southwest Regional, each compiling a 2-1 record in the singles qualifying bracket. Harris, who was seeded 12th among 64 players in the bracket, advanced to the round of 16 before finally falling in straight sets to LSU’s Daysi Espinal.
Schmulbach, who was seeded 14th, won her first match in the round of 64, but dropped her next two in the consolation bracket. Aba Butain and Wasson each dropped their first match before rebounding to win her next two matches in the consolation bracket.
The Mean Green had two doubles pairings competing in the tournament. Moreton and Schmulbach teamed up to finish with a 2-2 record, while Aba Butain and Harris posted a 1-2 mark.
The Mean Green’s first match of the spring season will be played January 28 at TCU (12 p.m.).
