Kutubidze And Kononova Fall In Doubles Semifinals, Kononova Reaches Consolation Finals

Oct. 23, 2016

WACO — North Texas’ Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze lost their ITA Texas Regional doubles semifinal match to Baylor’s Blair Shankle and Elizabeth Profit (6-1, 6-3) Sunday morning.

The No. 8 seeded Mean Green pair were just the second doubles team from North Texas to reach the regional semifinals. No doubles team has ever reached the finals.

“We faced a very tough team today and a dominant player in Blair Shankle,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “She took over the match in important moments.”

The North Texas sophomores have won seven doubles matches this fall and have shown potential to be a national championship caliber team. They defeated the nationally No. 36 ranked team two weeks ago in California at the ITA All-American.

“This is awesome for our ladies who are just sophomores,” Lama said. “They are disappointed not to have the opportunity to go to the National Indoor Championship but they are hungrier than ever to make it happen the next couple of years.”

Kononova’s Texas regional tournament isn’t quite over yet. She won her singles consolation semifinals match Sunday (6-0, 6-3) over TCU’s Sofiko Kadzhaya. This is Lama’s 11th season at North Texas. Under Lama, former Mean Green tennis players Kseniya Bardabush and Paula Dinuta won the singles ITA Texas Regional consolation championship.

“Maria has gotten better with each match,” Lama said. “She is showing why she is one of the top players in our region. We hope to finish a great tournament for the Mean Green with a championship.”
