Day One Recap
FORT WORTH, Texas (10/24/08) - The Mean Green tennis team played well for the second straight day at the ITA Southwest Regionals in Ft. Worth. Madura Ranganathan won her first round singles match and teamed with Irina Paraschiv in doubles to defeat a strong Baylor team.
North Texas head coach Sujay Lama talked about what he saw from the team on Friday.
"All in all it was a good day of matches," said Lama."The players had some breakthrough performances showing they could compete with the best. It seems like we are doing something new each day and always moving forward. I'm proud of the way we are representing North Texas."
Madura Ranganathan defeated Texas A&M's Stephanie Davidson in a three set match (2-6, 7-5, 6-2) to advance to the second round of the main draw. The doubles team of Ranganathan and Irina Paraschiv advanced to the third round after upseting the No.10 seeded Baylor team of Chmelarova/Filipiak (8-2).
The other Mean Green doubles team of Amy Joubert/Rachel Wilhelm came up short against Texas Tech's No. 12 seeded VanderDrift and Garland in the second round.
One of the most impressive matches of the day ended in a loss for North Texas' Irina Paraschiv. Paraschiv went toe-to-toe with the No. 2 seeded Megan Falcon of LSU in a three set match. After dropping the first set 4-6, Falcon responded by taking the next two sets for the win.
But looking back, it was a big match for Paraschiv who showed a lot of potential hanging with one of the nation's best players in Falcon.
