State's Top Tennis Players In Action for Regional Championships
Seven North Texas Athletes Make Trip to College Station
COLLEGE STATION - Seven members of the North Texas tennis team have made the trip to the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, taking place from October 22-26 at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center.
After solid play in two previous tournaments this fall season, head coach Sujay Lama is looking forward to seeing how his players can compete against the state’s top competition.
“This tournament is the biggest event of the fall season,” Lama said. “You get to see where you stand amongst the best in the region and everyone gets a chance to show what they are made of.”
The first round of singles play is scheduled to begin on Thursday at 8:00 a.m., when freshman Maria Kononova kicks things off against Texas State’s Kaitlyn Collins. Freshman Laura Arciniegas will also be in action in the morning's first matches, playing Maider Martin from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Senior Agustina Valenzuela duels Leah Davis from Abilene Christian at 9:15, with junior Alexis Thoma facing Mina Markovic of Houston 15 minutes later. Two players will be on the court at 11:00 a.m., when senior Anastasiya Shestakova takes on Madeleine Mortimore from Sam Houston State, and freshman Tamuna Kutubidze will play SMU's Ana Luisa Perez Lopez.
Meanwhile, senior Kamilla Galieva automatically advanced to the round of 64 after her scheduled opponent withdrew from the match. Galieva will now take on the winner between Rice’s Fernanda Astete or Reegan Greenwood from UT Rio Grande Valley, set for 1:45.
Three doubles teams will be in action on Thursday evening. Kononova and Kutubidze take on Mina Markovic and Despoina Vogasari from Houston, while Arciniegas and Galieva battle with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Hortense Boscher and Judit Vives.
The duo of Shestakova and Thoma received a first-round bye and will play UTA student-athletes Jessica Birowski and Carla Cordon at 5:30 on Thursday.
Champions from each main draw will be crowned on Monday, with the winners advancing to represent the Texas region at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
