North Texas Departs For ITA Regional
Mean Green Head To Waco
The fall season’s most important tournament will feature all eight Mean Green tennis players who will compete in the singles and doubles draws. Sophomore Kutubidze is on the cusp of the top-16 seeding for singles and will be seeded if someone drops out prior to Thursday’s 9 a.m. start.
“We’re very excited,” North Texas head coach Sujay Lama said. “This is the biggest event of the fall and it’s another opportunity for us to gain some valuable experience to play against the regions best.”
The Texas regional features 117 players from 21 different schools. There are 12 different regions across the country and the winners from each region will advance to the ITA Indoor National Championship in New York City before the spring season.
Kutubidze and Kononova recently competed at the ITA All-American Championship in California where they defeated the No. 36 ranked Oklahoma State team of Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari 8-7(7-4).
The sophomore Mean Green pair has won 23 doubles matches between the fall and spring seasons, and is 4-2 this fall.
North Texas freshmen Alexandra Heczey and Haruka Sasaki are coming off a strong finishes at the OU Invite a two weeks ago. Heczey won her final two singles matches and Sasaki won two of her last three.
“Since they’ve been here they’ve all gotten better,” Lama said. “Most of our steps have been steps forward. There hasn’t been any major set backs or anything so we’re in a good spot.”
