WACO, Texas (10/18/09) - North Texas Tennis had the biggest win in program history Sunday when the doubles duo of Irina Parachiv and Madura Ranganathan downed the No. 8 ranked team in the nation at the Wilson/ITA Texas Regional Championship.
Paraschiv and Ranganathan, who were also the Mean Green's first doubles squad to appear in the ITA All-American Tournament earlier this year, escaped a hard fought battle over Baylor's Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova with a 9-7 victory.
"This is a huge win for Irina , Maddy and our program," head coach Sujay Lama said. " We have preached to these guys from day one that they can go out on the court and compete and beat anyone, and they did. I'm very proud of them."
Up 7-2 going into the tenth game, Paraschiv and Ranganathan dropped five straight decisions before battling back to capture the last two.
"The thing that stuck out the most to me was that they never gave up," said Lama. "Thy kept believing that they were going to pull through and ultimately they did. Those last two games speaks volumes about where those two are mentally on the court."
Borsanyi and Broosova were rated No. 8 in the nation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations pre-season poll released in September and were the top seed at the tournament.
Paraschiv and Ranganathan will compete Monday morning at 10 a.m. against Texas A&M's pairing of Stephanie Davidson and Sheri Oliver in the quarterfinals.
