Day Two Recap
HOUSTON, Texas (10/19/08) - The North Texas tennis team capped off the weekend by winning three singles and two doubles titles at the 2008 Holiday Inn Astrodome Rice Classic in Houston. The Mean Green played its best tennis of the fall against tough competition showing the talent and potential for the future.
In three days of action, the squad posted a singles record of 16-5 and a doubles record of 7-2.
North Texas assistant coach Jeff Maren summed up the team's great performance over the weekend.
"We are more than happy with the team's play," said Maren. "I am proud of the team's willingness to battle despite fatigue. We believe there was a statement made in all of our wins and even our losses."
After the teams of Madura Ranganthan/Irina-Alexandra Paraschiv and Amy Joubert/Rachel Wilhelm won doubles championships on Saturday, three players took home singles titles on Sunday.
Madura Ranganthan defeated Monika Hadvigerova of UT-Arlington in the finals (3-6, 6-2, 6-4). It was somewhat of a redemption match for Ranganthan who lost to Hadvigerova in the finals of the Mean Green Invite on September 14 (6-1, 6-0).
The North Texas sophomore talked about how this match was different.
"I really practiced hard over the last month to get stronger," said Ranganathan. "I had more speed and just played better today in the finals."
The two other Mean Green players winning finals of singles were Catalina Cruz and Rachel Wilhelm. Cruz won over Kristen Reid of SMU (6-3, 6-4) and Wilhelm beat Houston's Jordan McCombs (6-3, 7-6).
Next up for North Texas is the ITA Regionals starting next Thursday, October 23 and concluding on Monday, October 27.
