LUBBOCK, Texas (10/19/07) Madura Ranganathan highlights a field of nine North Texas athletes competing at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Regional Tennis Championships this weekend.
The freshman standout will have her hands full with her Main Draw-Singles first round matchup, the No. 8 seeded Klara Jagosova from Texas-Arlington. Ranganathan advanced to the doubles semifinals last weekend at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational, but will face the preseason 109th ranked player in the nation according to College Tennis Online.
"We are really looking forward to the regional tournament. The way we have competed and the progress we have made in such a short time gives us confidence and momentum heading to the most important tournament of the fall season,” said Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama. “We have an opportunity to make some noise in Lubbock and continue to establish North Texas tennis in our region."
Catalina Cruz earned the No. 6 seed in the Qualifying Singles draw and will face off against Nina Ciric from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round. Rachel Wilhelm, Ashley Akin, Narine Kazarova, Shannon MacKenzie, Idalina Franca and Sammie Moreton will also be competing in the Qualifying draw. Amy Joubert will be competing doubles for the Mean Green.
Competing in this year's field will be 20 teams from across the Southwest, including Baylor, Houston, Lamar, Louisiana State, Louisiana Lafayette, Rice, Sam Houston State, Southern Methodist, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Christian, Texas State, Texas Tech, Texas-Arlington, Texas-El Paso, Texas-Pan American, and Texas-San Antonio.
The competition will feature some of the top collegiate women's players in the country going head-to-head in both doubles and singles play. The tournament consists of three draws; a 64-player qualifying singles round beginning Friday, a 64-player singles main draw kicking off at 3 p.m. Saturday, and a 64-team doubles draw also starting on Friday.
