Tennis Advances To Finals At Regionals

FORT WORTH, TX (10/19/06)- Megan Schmulbach and Idalina Franca advanced to the qualifying final round in singles play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament hosted by TCU. Sammie Moreton and Aziza Aba Butain won their first round of doubles, moving forward in the doubles main draw.


Franca defeated opponent Erika Iriarte from Texas A&M 6-2, 6-2 in her first match of the day. She went on to overcome Lena Satge from Louisiana State University 6-2, 6-1.


Schmulbach, the team’s only senior, was victorious in her first two matches of the tournament. She beat Sloane Mathis from Louisiana State University 6-3, 6-4, then defeated Julia Cirne-lima from UT- Pan American 6-2, 6-4.


Aba Butain was defeated in the first round of singles in a close match against UT-San Antonio, but had a comeback in first-round consolation play with a win over Marion Lehmann from the University of Louisiana Monroe.


Moreton and Aba Butain teamed up to conquer Bonnie Phillips and Jana Simurkova from Southeastern Louisiana 9-8 in the first round of doubles, clinching their position in the doubles main draw to be held tomorrow.


Head Coach Sujay Lama is very pleased with the girl’s performances and standings at the end of the first day of the tournament.


“It was really exciting to see our kids play today,” said Lama, “I saw so much improvement and I’m really proud of them. There were a lot of progresses made. Everyone competed very well. They had a lot of energy and were more aggressive. They were having a lot of fun. I am very with how things went today and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”


The tennis team is back in action tomorrow for the qualifying finals of the ITA Regional Tournament.
