HOUSTON, Texas (10/17/08) - The North Texas tennis team displayed one of their best days this fall winning eight of ten total matches on the first day of the 2008 Holiday Inn Astrodome Rice Classic in Houston on Friday.
North Texas head coach Sujay Lama expressed how proud he was of the team.
"I am very pleased with the way we played and competed today," said Lama. "We got off to a great start turning in solid all-around performances. I am excited to see how we play the rest of the weekend."
The Mean Green won six out of seven singles matches featuring three impressive results with players reaching the semifinals.
Madura Ranganathan defeated Mariantonieta Gutierrez of Lamar in dominant fashion (6-0, 6-0) setting up the match versus Analy Guzman of Rice tomorrow. Narine Kazarova beat Sloane Mathis of LSU (6-2, 6-3) advancing to face Rebekka Hanle of Rice in the next round. Irina-Alexandra Paraschiv got a win against Lucy Forward of Houston (7-6, 6-3) earning her semifinals match with Rice's Julie Chao.
The other singles winners for North Texas were Catalina Cruz, Shannon MacKenzie, and Rachel Wilhelm.
In doubles, the Mean Green won two of three matches.
The team of Madura Ranganathan and Irina-Alexandra Paraschiv defeated Houston's team of Ring and McCombs (8-2). The other victory was Amy Joubert and Rachel Wilhelm beating the team of Reid and Kennedy of SMU (8-5).
Both North Texas teams play in the semis tomorrow.
The second day action starts back up Saturday morning in Houston.
