MIDLAND, Texas (10/11/08) - North Texas freshman, Irina Paraschiv, advanced to the semifinals in day two of the Midland Racquet Club Invitational.
Paraschiv plays tomorrow in her semifinals backdraw match against Nikola Matovivoa of UT-Arlington.
Her road began with a victory in the round of 16 over Christie Lyles of Texas A&M in dominant fashion (7-5, 6-0). Lyles is considered the Aggies No. 2 singles player and was ranked No. 13 in the Southwest Region.
Irina then beat Varsha Shiva-Shankar of Rice in another stellar straight set victory (6-2, 6-2) to put herself into the semis.
Mean Green head coach, Sujay Lama, commented on his freshman's play.
"Irina has had a terrific start to her career," Lama said. "She is getting better with each match and is a force to be reckoned with in the future."
Catalina Cruz of North Texas lost her match to Matovivoa of UT-Arlington in the quarterfinals. The two players battled with Matovivoa winning (7-6, 0-6, 12-10).
The Mean Green went 2-2 in singles on the day. The team did not play any doubles matches.
The final day of the Invite starts up tomorrow morning from Midland.
