DENTON, Texas - North Texas tennis continues its fall season this weekend in Flushing, N.Y., at the United States Tennis Association's Collegiate Invitational.
The tournament, which starts Saturday and runs through Monday, will take place at the same site as the most recent grand slam of tennis, the US Open.
"To have the opportunity to play at the site of the US Open is such a privilege and a fantastic opportunity for our team," said head coach Sujay Lama. "It is extremely difficult to get into this event and we want to make the best out of it."
After a successful appearance at the Sooner Invitational, the Mean Green is looking to build upon that success in every area. Four of the seven members of North Texas that played came away with a winning record in singles, including a perfect 4-0 from freshman Kseniya Bardabush and a 3-0 record from senior Paula Dinuta.
All three doubles teams recorded winning records with freshman Franziska Sprinkmeyer and junior Barbora Vykydalova teaming up to go 3-0 and win their flight championship.
Junior transfer Valentina Starkova, who went 1-3, lost all of her matches in a third set or tiebreaking fashion in the "A" flight.
"We've worked hard the last couple of weeks and made a lot of progress with our conditioning and the tactical part of our game," Lama added. "This tournament will give us a chance to see if that improvement can translate in match play against opponents that we are not familiar with."
This tournament will mark the last time North Texas will leave the state of Texas until its last tournament style match in January.
"I am amazed how intrinsically motivated this team and how hard they work every day," said Lama. "Traveling together as a team is also a great way to build on the togetherness and the family theme we have for this team."
Other schools participating in the event are Army, Binghamton, Boston College, Brown, Buffalo, Charleston Southern, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Harvard, Liberty University, LIU, Princeton, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. Francis, St. Johns and Yale.
Play begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with doubles action. Check back with MeanGreenSports.com for blog updates from senior Nadia Lee and junior Valentina Starkova on their play and experience in Flushing, NY.
