LUBBOCK (10/2/04) -- The North Texas women’s tennis team wrapped a successful outing at Texas Tech’s Scarborough Specialties Open on Saturday as Katherine Harris and Kelli Royer both claimed a flight championship.
Harris picked up victories over players from New Mexico State and Texas Tech, defeating the Red Raiders Erin Hunter in the Flight C title match on Saturday. Harris finished the weekend with a 3-0 record and has now won six consecutive matches.
Royer had a strong showing in Flight D, knocking off players from Air Force, Texas State and Texas Tech. She completed the two-day tournament with a 3-0 record as well, including a 6-2, 6-3 win over Texas Tech’s Janet Durham.
In addition to Royer and Harris, North Texas’ Megan Schmulbach, Ashley Sammis, Ingrid Stockinger and Holly Lee also competed in the tourney. In all, North Texas compiled a 12-5 combined record and saw five players collect a top three finish in one of the six flights played.
Schmulbach finished third in flight A, Stockinger third in Flight E and Lee second in Flight F.
North Texas had three teams compete in the three doubles flights and combined to post a 5-4 record. Harris and Royer teamed up to take third place in Flight A. Sammis and Schmulbach paired up to finish third in Flight B, while Aziza Aba Butain and Lee finished fourth in Flight C.
North Texas is back in action Oct. 15-19 at the ITA Regional Tournament in College Station, Texas.
