Lubbock (10/1/06) - The North Texas tennis team traveled to Texas Tech this weekend and competed in the Scarborough Specialties.
In singles play, junior, Idalina Franca was the only North Texas player to secure a win in the first round. In the black draw, Franca defeated Kelly Morgan from Air Force in a close match that ended with a tie breaker of 10-3.
In red doubles play, Aziza Aba Butain had a successful first round as she advanced to round two in the main draw with two separate doubles teams. She and Sammie Moreton received a bye in their first round but fell to ACU 8-4. She then teamed up with Kelly Morgan from Air Force to obtain a win against ACU 8-4. Franca teamed up with Schmulbach to compete in red doubles. They fell to UTSA, but went on to the back draw where they acquired a victory over Texas State 8-5.
Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama is proud of his team’s performance but understands there is a lot of work to be done in building the program.
“From the standpoint of performance, it was a disappointing weekend.” Lama said. “We have been taking a lot of steps forward everyday since the beginning of the fall season. Expectations were a bit higher because we did so well at the Mean Green Invitational last weekend. In building a program, at times, we take a step back, but as long as we know we need to work hard and realize that it may not be easy, we will begin to take a step in the right direction.”
