NACOGDOCHES, Texas (9/27/08) - The Stephen F. Austin Invitational came to a close on Saturday with North Texas putting together solid play in two days of action.
The highlight of Saturday was the North Texas pairing of Narine Kazarova and Ashley Akin winning their doubles final. They defeated the Lamar team of Nava/Gonzales, 8-5.
It was a good win over a Lamar team who won three main draws over the weekend, two in singles and one in doubles.
Kazarova and Akin beat the Sam Houston State team of Patricia Manzur/Eleonora Kuruc in impressive fashion, 8-0, in the semifinals.
Two other North Texas teams won third place doubles matches.
Rachel Wilhelm and Irina Paraschiv beat the Gutierrez sisters, Maria and Mariaryeni, of Lamar (8-6) and the team of Catalina Cruz/Amy Joubert got a victory versus Adna Curacovic/Suncica Strikic of Northwestern State, 8-5.
During singles play, the Mean Green had four nice wins featuring four separate players.
Amy Joubert and Rachel Wilhelm both won their backdraw matches, Narine Kazarova won her third place match (6-3, 6-1), and Ashley Akin won a thriller beating Suncica Strikic of Northwestern State 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 for third place.
After advancing to the finals in her draw yesterday, Shannon MacKenzie lost the finals match to Claire Clarke of UL-Monroe 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday.
North Texas head coach, Sujay Lama, commented on his team's play over the weekend.
"I liked the competition we saw in the tournament," said Lama. "We had better execution and improved in certain areas. The players made some nice comebacks showing that they could step up. I am looking forward to our next tournament."
Mean Green Tennis gets back on the court at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California on October 4.
