DENTON (9/24/05) -- Ina Wieding and Aziza Aba Butain went undefeated in the first day of action at the Mean Green Invitational on Friday to lead the North Texas women’s tennis team in its 2005-06 debut, but both players dropped their semifinals matches on Saturday as the two-day tournament at Goldfield Tennis Center came to a close.
Wieding, Aba Butain and freshman Lynley Wasson all finished the tournament with a team-best 2-1 record. Wieding won a first-set tiebreaker against Texas Tech’s Tara Browning in the Flight A semifinals before falling 6-3 in the second set and dropping a hard-fought 17-15 decision in the third.
Jana Cuccinello of Texas State was able to slip past Aba Butain in the semifinals of Flight C by 7-5, 6-3 scores. Aba Butain still needs one more win for her 20th career victory.
Wasson claimed the Mean Green’s only victory on the day, defeating Texas State’s Sumarie Miller in an additional match that did not fall under one of the tournament’s three singles flights.
Freshman Sammie Moreton and junior Megan Schmulbach entered the Flight A doubles semifinals with a 2-0 record as well, but fell 8-3 to Browning and Lakann Wagley (Texas Tech) in their first match on Saturday. Browning and Wagley went on to win the Flight A championship.
UT-Arlington’s Klara Jagosova and Anete Rozkalne won the Flight A and Flight B championships, respectively, while Kristen Reid of SMU won the Flight C title. UTA also captured the Flight B doubles crown as Marissa Brown and Rozklane teamed up to post a 3-0 record.
North Texas returns to action Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Scarborough Specialties Open (hosted by Texas Tech) in Lubbock, Texas.
