The North Texas tennis team finished day one at the UNLV Invitational with four out of six players advancing to the semifinals and two out of three doubles teams advancing to Saturdays semifinals.
“This was a very productive day overall,” said Sujay Lama. “We competed well across the board and made improvements in several areas.”
In the singles quarterfinals for the Mean Green, freshman Alexis Thoma and Ana Sofia Cordero earned wins by defeating Long Beach State (6-4, 5-7, 6-1) and Southern Illinois (6-3, 7-5).
“Our two freshmen showed a lot of poise in their wins, it is a good way for them to start out their collegiate careers,” Said Lama.
Ksenyia Bardabush defeated South Alabama 7-5, 6-2 in order to advance to Saturdays match against LBSU.
Franziska Sprinkmeyer also advanced by defeating New Mexico State (6-2, 6-4), she will take on SAU in the semifinals.
In doubles play, Bardabush and Sprinkmeyer won to play NAU. Thoma and Valenzuela will go head to head against the duo from Middle Tennessee State.
Semifinals play will begin Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.
