Tennis Begins Season At Longhorn Invitational

DENTON, Texas (09/19/2012) - The North Texas tennis team opens the 2012-13 season as it travels to Austin, Texas, to play in the Longhorn Invitational Friday through Sunday, Sept. 21-23, at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

Head coach Sujay Lama and the Mean Green begin fall tournament play on Friday morning against opponents from Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, TCU, UTSA, West Virginia, SMU, Houston, Rice, Denver and Tulane.

"We are excited to see our team compete this weekend," Lama said. "We are looking forward to seeing our four freshmen play their first matches at the collegiate level for the first time. Fall season is the developmental phase and the main objective is to get as many matches as possible to learn and grow from them."

The Mean Green has five returners from last season's Sun Belt Champion squad including seniors Ilona Serchenko, Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova as well as sophomores Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer.

This will be the first competitive collegiate matches in the United States for freshmen Emelia Box, Dane Joubert, Victoria Parshikova and Agustina Rufin.

Tournament draw can be found on the United States Tennis Association's website or by clicking here. The website will be updated throughout the tournament.

A recap of this weekend's tournament will be provided Sunday on MeanGreenSports.com.
