DENTON, Texas -- North Texas tennis ran away with the Mean Green Invitational Sunday morning at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
Junior Irina Paraschiv fought back from an early deficit to win the “A” flight singles title over Tyler Junior College’s Sun Wen 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Wen is the No. 1 seeded player for TJC, who is expected to be among the favorites to win the JUCO National Championships in the spring of 2011.
In “B” flight singles, sophomore Barbora Vykydalova squared off with teammate Nadia Lee in the championship match.
Vykydalova was able to squeeze out a win in the first set 6-4, before giving a set back to her junior teammate 6-4 in the second. After going back and forth in the third set, Vykydalova pulled away and secured the match with a 6-4 victory.
Lee was the only Mean Green player to lose a match on Sunday as senior Amy Joubert and freshman Carolina Barboza also won their respective matches.
North Texas was also able to grab all three doubles titles for the weekend.
The “A” doubles team of Madura Ranganathan and Lee coasted to victory on Sunday defeating Northwestern State’s “A” team 8-2.
Paraschiv and Vykydalova also teamed up to win the “B” flight doubles championship with an identical 8-2 result.
The Mean Green will head to Norman, Okla., for its next fall tournament next weekend, Friday, September 24 through Sunday, September 26.
