Newcomers Pace Mean Green at Sooner Invite

NORMAN, Okla. - Mean Green tennis wrapped up day one of the Sooner Invitational and the 2011-12 season on Friday with a 7-1 overall record.

North Texas had four newcomers shine on Friday, including freshmen Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer, who each went undefeated.

"Today was a great start to the season," said associate head coach Jeff Maren. "Everyone played well, especially our two freshmen, Ksenyia Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer. The team competed hard in every match, and we look forward to seeing more of the same tomorrow."

Six of the seven participants for the Mean Green played two doubles matches in the morning, with only the top rated team of Valentina Starkova and Nadia Lee dropping a match.

Sprinkmeyer teamed with junior Barbora Vykydalvoa to  lose only three games in two doubles matches, taking out the doubles team from ACU 8-1, before besting a duo from Sun Belt Conference foe UALR 8-2.

The other doubles team of Bardabush and Ilona Serchenko had a rougher road in the "B" draw, but prevailed in both matches to finish 2-0 on the day.

Singles saw both Starkova and Serchenko drop three set matches while Sprinkmeyer, Lee and Vykydalova advanced through their first round matchups. 

Bardabush and senior Paula Dinuta were given byes through the first round of singles.

The Sooner Invitational will continue tomorrow from the Headington Family Tennis Center on campus of the Unviersity of Oklahoma.
