FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (9/16/03) The North Texas women’s tennis team began its fall schedule at the Lady Razorbacks Invitational and while there was no team scoring, six different Mean Green players picked up at least one victory at the tournament.
North Texas took eight of 10 players on its roster to the tournament, seven of them newcomers to the 2003-04 squad. Freshmen Kelli Royer and Megan Schmulbach led the way with two victories each, while Krysta Lee, Katherine Harris, Ashley Sammis and Ingrid Stockinger all captured one win.
Stockinger and Schmulbach both won their first-round match before falling in the second round and entering the consolation bracket. Schmulbach, Lee and Royer all advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket.
Although Royer dropped her first match, she rebounded with a good victory over Oklahoma State’s Linda Karaskova in the consolation bracket. Karaskova was ranked No. 122 in the nation as of last February and Oklahoma State finished the season ranked No. 25 in the nation. Schmulbach also had a solid outing against a tough opponent, falling to Arkansas’ Simona Arghire. Arghire played the No. 1 spot last season for a Lady Razorbacks team that finished ranked No. 70 in the nation.
In doubles play, Harris and Schmulbach picked up the only North Texas victory. They knocked off Wichita State’s Donnelly and Exeni 8-4 in the first round before suffering an 8-6 setback in their next match to Garza and Stanojevic from Southwest Missouri State. There was no consolation bracket for doubles.
The Mean Green will have a three-week break before competing in the Houston Tournament Oct. 3-5. However, the Mean Green will host the North Texas Alumni Tournament on Sept. 27 in an exhibition setting. The Alumni Tournament is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the North Texas tennis courts and will be played from 1-3 p.m.
