Denton, Texas (9/11/09) – The University of North Texas and head tennis coach Sujay Lama announced the schedule for the 2009-10 season which features two teams that have won recent national championships, eight teams that were ranked in the final 2009 ITA rankings and seven teams that competed in the 2009 NCAA Championship.
The Mean Green will start its dual matches in the state of Florida on January 23 with a match against Jacksonville University. From there they will make the short drive to Gainesville and take on the Florida Gators, a team which competed in the round of 16 in last year’s NCAA Championship and won a national championship in 2003.
“This is by far the toughest schedule our program has ever had,” said Lama. “It gives us an opportunity to measure our self with some of the best programs in the country and move up in the rankings. Most importantly, it will help us get ready for our conference championship.”
After a short trip to Norman, Okla., to face the Sooners on February 3, North Texas starts a tough string of matches. Texas Tech, who finished the year ranked 73, comes to Denton as the first of four straight duals with opponents that were ranked at the end of the 2009 season.
When North Texas returns from a brutal two week stretch of trips to Tulsa, Okla., and Atlanta, Ga., where the Mean Green take on 2007 national champion Georgia Tech, it has the luxury of six straight home matches, including Texas-Arlington and Louisville along with conference foes Denver and Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Sun Belt Championship comes on the heels of two conference road matches with Middle Tennessee and Troy. The Championship will be held April 22-25 in New Orleans, La.
