Tennis, Sprinkmeyer Honored for Academic Excellence
3.55 Team GPA Tied for Best in North Texas Athletics
At the 2014 Mean Green Kick-Off event that took place the evening of August 24, the North Texas tennis team was recognized for its extraordinary accomplishments in the classroom. To go along with an 11-11 record during the 2013-14 season, the seven women combined for a 3.55 team GPA, which tied the swimming and diving team for the best cumulative mark in Mean Green athletics.
The Kick-Off was held in the Apogee Stadium HUB Club, where student-athletes from all sports gathered to celebrate the beginning of athletic competition for a number of teams. North Texas director of athletics Rick Villareal made an appearance to address the coaches and players the night before classes began session for the 2014-15 academic year.
During the ceremony, Franziska Sprinkmeyer received three individual honors of her own; the Conference USA Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award, Conference USA Spirit Award and the Mean Green Scholar Award for the entire team. Along with Kseniya Bardabush, Sprinkmeyer will be one of two seniors for head coach Sujay Lama this upcoming year. They will look to set an example for the five younger student-athletes on the roster, both on and off the court.
Hailing from Nordhorn, Germany - located on the border of Germany and the Netherlands - Sprinkmeyer has already put together an accomplished doubles career for the Mean Green, the majority of them paired with Bardabush. For the 2013-14 season, the duo boasted a 6-0 doubles record, which earned them First Team All-Conference recognition.
