North Texas Announces Challenging 2017 Slate
Mean Green Opens 2017 Season At NCAA Runner-Up And Host Conference Championship
DENTON — North Texas’ tennis team has released its schedule for the 2016-17 season. The Mean Green team that went 8-0 at home last season has 15 home matches this year, the most since their 1986-87 season. Eight of those home matches are against teams that were ranked in the top-75 last year.
The last of those 15 home contests will be the Conference USA Championship in April. It is the first time North Texas has hosted a conference tournament since 2009.
“Hosting the conference championship makes this an even more special year for us,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “We wanted to schedule a lot of home meets, because we wanted to make sure we were really comfortable at home. Going undefeated at home last year was a tremendous boost to our confidence and we want to continue that.”
North Texas finished ranked No. 73 last season. They will play 11 schools this coming season that were ranked in the top-75 last year. Seven of those schools reached the NCAA Tournament. The Mean Green’s first duel match opponent of the 2017 spring season, Oklahoma State, ended the season ranked No. 8 and lost to Stanford in the NCAA Championship. North Texas travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma to play the Cowboys on Jan. 21.
The Mean Green’s fall schedule begins on Sept. 16 in Midland, Texas, at the Midland Invite. Last year at the Invite, North Texas’ Laura Arciniegas lost to teammate and 2016 graduate Kamilla Galieva in the B Draw Finals. In doubles play, then freshmen Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova reached the semifinals.
