Tennis Faces Nine Ranked Opponents in 2011-12
Mean Green tennis head coach Sujay Lama announced his team's 2011-12 schedule from the Waranch Tennis Complex on Thursday.
DENTON, Texas - Mean Green tennis head coach Sujay Lama announced his team's 2011-12 schedule from the Waranch Tennis Complex on Thursday.
North Texas, coming off a loss in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament to eventual champion FIU, will begin the year with five tournaments before opening dual match play.
Things kick off September 16-18 for the Mean Green in Norman, Okla., for the Sooner Invitational. From there, North Texas will travel to Flushing, New York, for the USTA Invite, which will take place in the same site as the US Open.
"The highlight this fall will be the opportunity to play at the site where the US Open is played," said Lama. "This will be an incredible experience for our team."
After the ITA Texas Regional (Oct. 21-25) and the North Texas Classic (Nov. 4-6), the Mean Green will play in one last tune-up tournament Jan. 13-15 at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational.
The dual match schedule features nine teams that finished last season ranked, including six in the top 50 and three in the top-25.
A spring season opening match against Lamar in Beaumont, Texas, is followed by the first big test of the year when North Texas travels back to Norman, Okla., to face-off with the Sooners. Oklahoma finished last season ranked No. 24 in the country.
The month of Feb. is particularly tough as six of the eight opponents are ranked, including dates against No. 22 Arkansas (Feb. 5), at No. 59 TCU (Feb. 8), at No. 35 Arizona (No. 35), vs. No. 39 Cal Poly (Feb 19) and hosting No. 70 FIU (Feb. 26) to finish off the month.
"Our spring schedule is well balanced with matches against the top teams in the conference as well as plenty of ranked opponents," Lama added. "This will give us a chance to grow and develop and peak for the postseason. We are really excited to host the conference championships at home."
The Mean Green will make a return appearance to No. 21 Tulsa on March 2 and play its third Big 12 opponent, Kansas, on March 3.
Two rivalry matches return to the Waranch Tennis Complex when North Texas plays host to Denver on March 9 and UTA on March 27.
A regular season road trip to Troy, Ala., to face Troy and Middle Tennessee precedes the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which will be played at the Waranch Tennis Complex April 19-22.
