Mean Green Tennis Makes 11th Straight ITA All-Academic Team
Program Has Earned ITA Academic Award Every Season Under Lama
Tempe, Ariz. -- For the 11th consecutive season, the North Texas tennis team has been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team and had at least one athlete named ITA Scholar-Athlete.
The Mean Green have been named an ITA All-Academic Team every year since head coach Sujay Lama took over the program in 2006. The honor is given to teams who achieve a combined cumulative 3.20 or higher grade point average.
"The women's tennis team consistently achieves academic excellence at North Texas," said assistant director to student services David Bekker. " Coach Lama has built a culture of extraordinary dedication to academics."
The three North Texas tennis players named ITA Scholar-Athletes for maintaining at least a 3.50 G.P.A. were juniors Maria Kononova and Laura Arcinegas and sophomore Haruka Sasaki. This was Kononova and Arciniegas' second time being named to the honor. Sasaki was also awarded the Conference USA Academic Medal this past season for maintaining a 3.75 or higher G.P.A.
"It is amazing to observe the team's hard work and the respect they have for education," Bekker said.
In May, North Texas was recognized with one of the highest academic honors when the team's NCAA Academic Progress Rate score fell inside the top 10 percent of all schools nationally. It was the second year in a row the Mean Green tennis program had been recognized for its outstanding APR score.
