Two North Texas Athletes Receive C-USA Scholar Athlete Awards
Rossum, Sprinkmeyer Among 18 Honorees From 2014-15
DENTON - Two North Texas students were named to the Conference USA Scholar Athlete list, announced by league commissioner Britton Banowsky on Thursday.
The Mean Green’s Krista Rossum and Franziska Sprinkmeyer were two of the student-athletes presented with the award based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic accomplishments and service. In total, 18 winners were announced from each conference-sponsored sport, and both Rossum and Sprinkmeyer are repeat winners from a year ago.
Rossum, a four-year standout on the North Texas swimming team, finished up another impressive campaign in 2015. The Manitoba, Canada native was one of six in the conference to be named to the C-USA Swimming & Diving All-Academic Team, making the cut with a 3.92 GPA in biochemistry. Outside of the classroom, Rossum’s dominance in the pool was apparent as she broke her own records in the 200 IM and 400 IM at the C-USA Championships in February, good enough to earn all-conference honors for the fourth consecutive year.
Franziska Sprinkmeyer, a native of Nordhorn, Germany, was once again a pivotal member of the North Texas tennis team. After graduating in May 2014 with summa cum laude honors, Sprinkmeyer continues to work towards a graduate degree in Recreation, Event and Sport Management. On the court, she and partner Kseniya Bardabush took second-team all-conference honors in doubles with an unblemished 3-0 record against conference opponents, making 2015 the third consecutive year for the duo to earn a conference postseason award. No stranger to service, Sprinkmeyer was also actively involved with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as a statistics tutor for other North Texas student-athletes.
