Mean Green Tennis Recognized In Year-End Rankings
NT Finishes At No. 73 Nationally; Kutubidze Takes Regional Recognition
DENTON — The North Texas tennis team was recognized in the season’s final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, coming in at No. 73 among the nation’s Division I women’s teams. The ranking is the team’s best finish since ending the year at No. 60 in 2013.
The Mean Green’s position in the ranking comes after a 13-10 dual season that included wins over No. 36 Oklahoma and No. 59 UT Arlington. North Texas finishes the year by coming in at seventh in the ITA’s Texas regional ranking, trailing Conference USA champion Rice by one spot.
Individually, Tamuna Kutubidze was ranked as the No. 18 player in Texas. That comes after a season in which the freshman tallied a 13-4 dual record, the best mark among North Texas players. She ended the year on an eight-match win streak with her two-set victory against No. 92 Katherine Ip of Rice in the final match of the year.
North Texas advanced to the C-USA semifinals for the second year in 2015-16, remained undefeated at the Waranch Tennis Complex and three players were acknowledged with all-conference honors. Kutubidze joined freshman Maria Kononova as first-team selections, both in singles and as a doubles pair. Senior Anastasiya Shestakova was also named to the all-C-USA second team.
