DENTON — In the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings for thje 2017-18 year, North Texas tennis junior Maria Kononova earned a No. 66 national ranking and No. 6 ranking in the Texas region.

In addition to Kononova’s ranking, which is out of nearly 2,000 collegiate tennis players, the Mean Green’s doubles team of Tamuna Kutubidze and Alexandra Heczey earned a No. 7 ranking in the region.

One of the Mean Green’s all-time winningest tennis players, Kononova battled through injuries in her junior campaign to collect 19 wins — nine duel match wins — and finished the year with an invite to the NCAA Individual Championships, the first in UNT women’s tennis history.

On her way to the NCAA Championships, Kononova, beat the No. 2 nationally ranked player and won singles titles in the fall and was ranked as high as No. 41 in the country.

Kutubidze and Heczey became a dominant force towards the end of this season after never playing with one another until January. As soon as the two began to click, which didn’t take long, the two became tone setters early in matches helping the Mean Green win the all important doubles point.

Kutubidze and Heczey finished the year with a 7-4 record, all at the No. 1 position in the doubles lineup and all coming in the winter or spring. They picked up wins against ranked opponents, such as Houston and against NCAA Tournament teams like Georgia State.

With no seniors on this past year’s team, North Texas returns all eight women next season as they make a push to win the program’s fourth conference championships since 2010.
