DENTON, Texas (5/01/13) – North Texas women’s tennis head coach Sujay Lama announced the signing of Ana Sofia Cordero to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday. Cordero, a native of Puerto Rico, has a World Junior International Tennis Federation ranking of No. 474.
“I am very excited to come to North Texas,” Cordero said. “I know it’s going to be an amazing experience. I decided to commit to this university not only because of the great academic and athletic department that it offered but also because of the people that surround it.”
Cordero has been training and traveling to ITF tournaments under the leadership of coach Gabriel Jaramilllo, of the Club Med Academies in Florida. Previous to her time in Florida, Cordero played under the guidance of Coach Antonio Hernandez, coach to former No. 1 player Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.
Cordero has been a member of the Puerto Rico Fed Cup team since 2011 and entered the Junior ITF Tournament Circuit in 2012. She has improved from level five events to level one events throughout the year.
“Coach Lama and the girls on the team were remarkable (on my visit),” Cordero added. “It really felt like a family. Everyone was very nice and I felt at home the minute I got there. I look forward to the next four amazing years.”
