MOBILE, Ala. (4/23/04) - The North Texas women’s tennis team (15-9) won its third consecutive match with a 5-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (7-13) in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Friday at Mobile Tennis Center.
The No. 7 seed, North Texas will now play No. 2 Denver at 3 p.m. in a quarterfinals match. Denver is ranked No. 52 nationally and received a first-round bye.
North Texas won its 15th match, its most-single victories since the 1986-87 team won 15 matches as well. One more victory will give North Texas its fourth-best record in school history.
With North Texas leading 3-1, Megan Schmulbach clinched the victory with a straight-sets win over Cecilia Varela in flight four. Kelli Royer, Ashley Sammis and Ingird Stockinger also picked up victories, while UL Lafayette’ Kimmie Lyles won flight five to account for the Ragin’ Cajuns only point. Stockinger and Royer each picked up their team-high 17th win of the season.
The Mean Green got the doubles point to start the match, winning flights one and three. Krysta Lee and Harris won their 15th match of the season with an 8-2 win at No. 1, while Holly Lee and Schmulbach took flight three by an 8-5 score. Krysta Lee and Harris’ 15 victories in the top flight tie the third most in school-history by a No. 1 doubles team.
The Mean Green’s 3 p.m. match against Denver will be its final match of the day. Regardless of the outcome, North Texas will play its following match Saturday morning.
